On 4 July 2023 Living Standards played Fringe In The Round, at The Bristol Fringe.
This was the first full gig that guitarist Martin Vishnick and I played as the duo and it was a memorable night, with standing room only and a super appreciative and supportive crowd as always at Fringe In The Round.
Opening the proceedings was the outstanding Ronan Perrett Quartet playing original tunes from their new release ‘Fictions’, with Perrett on alto sax, Mike De Souza on guitar, Joseph Costi on synths and Ben Brown on drums and percussion. They conjured a unique sound-world encompassing jazz, electronic and contemporary classical influences.
Martin and I played ten tunes including two of my originals and one of his, as well as a selection of timeless standards. Some of these are a century old, yet still they manage to pack a punch and can swing the house down. We hope we did them justice.
We really had a fantastic time and can’t say enough what a warm atmosphere and overall creative, inventive musical space trumpeter Nick Malcolm and saxophonist Alex Merritt have created with Fringe In The Round, featuring some of the best musicians not just in the Southwest but nationally. Long may it continue.
